Compression model for digital breast phantoms

Contact:  Gustavo Pacheco Guevara

Realistic simulations are extremely important for the optimization and evaluation of novel imaging modalities. Simulating mammography acquisitions involves recreating the breast positioning and compression. For this, we have developed a Python-based compression simulation pipeline.

Method and tasks:

Our pipeline generates compressed breast phantoms from segmented (uncompressed) breast CT scans. Your tasks will be to:

  • Derive compression settings from the breast volume itself, instead of relying on pre-recorded thickness values.
  • Validate the force and pressure on the breast using clinical values as reference.

This project involves working with segmented volumes, a finite-element solver, and 3D meshes in a Python environment.

Goals:

  • Validated, flexible compression pipeline

  • A large dataset of compressed breast phantoms
